Sermatech Coatings For Industrial Gas Turbines   Markets — Industrial Gas Turbine

More than 35 years ago, Sermatech became a pioneer in the turbomachinery protective coating industry with the introduction of the SermeTel® family of coatings. Since then, we have protected tens of thousands of pieces of ground turbomachinery against the ravages of corrosion, erosion, fouling and oxidation, boosting performance and saving millions of dollars in fuel, maintenance and replacement costs for our customers.

We have developed specialty coatings for a wide

range of conditions to meet the needs of gas and steam turbine operators, as well as compressor operators worldwide. We also have developed innovative delivery systems like our Mobile Field Service Centers (MFSCs) that can provide protective coating services for large turbine rotors, and associated components and assemblies right at your location.

With a global network of facilities and our MFSCs, Sermatech can coat ground turbomachinery virtually anywhere in the world.

Hot Section

Costly nickel, cobalt and stainless steel IGT hot section components are under continuous bombardment in the severe gas path environment. Oxidation, corrosion and erosion are continually eating away at performance and can ultimately lead to service failure.

Sermatech coatings can protect these components and keep them running at high performance for tens of thousands of additional hours. And to a turbine operator, that translates to reduced repair costs, less downtime and more efficient operation.

SermAlcote™, our new slurry aluminizing process service for producing protective coatings offers significant improvements in cost, quality and turntime over competitive aluminizing processes, while meeting existing commercial specifications.

The new process offers an alternative to industrial pack and vapor-phase aluminizing processes used for producing protective coatings on hot section components. SermAlcote processes have been developed to meet common commercial aluminide process specifications for aluminide coatings, platinum-modified aluminide coatings, and overaluminized MCrAlY coatings.

SermaLoy™ J is a unique slurry applied aluminide diffusion coating specifically designed for protection of hot section components. It is applied to the component surface, then diffused. This results in a coating that adheres tightly to the part surface and is very resistant to both low and high temperature hot corrosion and oxidation.

SermaLoy 1515 is designed to protect components made of high-strength, low-chromium nickel-base alloys extremely resistant to both high and low temperature (types 1 and 2) hot corrosion, as well as oxidation. And Sermaloy 1545 is designed specifically to protect the inside cooling passages of turbine blades.

What’s more, Sermatech offers a complete line of pack aluminide coatings, including platinum aluminides, in addition to a full range of thermal spray coating systems tailored to the specific application. We also offer high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF)- and Gator-Gard®-applied MCrAlY overlay, as well as specialized Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) designed for use on gas turbine vanes and nozzle segments. And as with all thermal spray technologies, we use multi-axis robots and automated systems to assure reproducibility and precise control of coating thickness.

Cold Section

Run your turbines more efficiently and help avoid expensive hot section replacement costs downstream by protecting your compressor section components with SermeTel coatings.

The ultra-smooth, aerodynamic finish of SermeTel coatings reduces fouling and corrosion, decreases fuel usage, and enhances compressor efficiency – even in heavily pitted units. With more than 24 million operating hours logged on industrial gas turbines, SermeTel – the original aluminum-ceramic coating – has a proven track record.

Two of our state-of-the-art aluminum-ceramic coatings are SermeTel 5380DP and SermeTel 2F-1. SermeTel 5380DP is ideal for use on components where surface finish is critical, such as compressor airfoils. SermeTel 2F-1 is well suited for turbine cases and disks.

SermeTel coatings are either Bill of Material or offered as an option by all major industrial gas turbine manufacturers.

In addition, Sermatech’s thermal spray coatings can help resist wear and provide clearance control. And, our Copper-Nickel-Indium coatings prevent fretting wear on blade disks and help control clearance and restore worn compressor disks.

Steam Turbine Coatings

Solid particle erosion (SPE) is a performance degrading condition that affects nearly 90% of the world's steam turbines. Often caused by exfoliation from boiler tubing, SPE slowly eats away at critical steam path components. Sermatech uses a variety of coating technologies to combat SPE and corrosion on steam turbine rotors, diaphragms, buckets and control valves.

Our Gator-Gard® chromium carbide MCrAlY coatings are specifically designed for effective high-temperature erosion control on components such as steam valve plugs. The Gator-Gard process delivers a high-energy, tightly controlled plasma spray that yields a hard, dense coating with high purity and bond strength. And since Gator-Gard applied coatings need no heat treatment or curing, the process is well suited for on-site applications. For steam turbine components operating above 1200°F (649°C), Sermatech’s GG-CC-130 chromium carbide coating has been proven successful in providing high temperature wear and erosion resistance.

And to protect against steam turbine corrosion and fouling, our SermaLon® coating system provides excellent protection to 403 and 410 stainless steel substrates exposed to corrosive steam conditions or low pH wet chloride environments.

Centrifugal Compressors

Centrifugal compressors used in chemical and petrochemical processing applications are often subject to fouling due to the spontaneous formation of polymers in the gas stream.

Fouling increases energy losses caused by friction in the gas path, creates random changes of pressure distribution within the gas path and reduces flow area. In addition, excessive material buildup on a compressor rotor can throw it out of balance and lead to fatigue loading, reduced component life and premature shutdowns.

The patented SermaLon® coating system, specifically designed to protect centrifugal compressor rotating and stationary components against fouling and corrosion, can keep your turbomachinery on-line longer by reducing fouling and maintaining compressor performance.

An innovative three-part system, SermaLon consists of a sacrificial bond coat, an intermediate inhibitive coat and an ultra-smooth top coat. This unique combination provides an aerodynamically smooth, non-reactive, nonstick outer surface that resists wetting and the fouling build-up it causes. In addition, the SermaLon coating system provides an erosion barrier to wash oil as well as excellent resistance to corrosion–all of which helps extend the time between outages.
